Review colors in the settings that matter
Look at samples beside retained flooring, counters or woodwork in the light you normally use. Consider the view through doorways as well as each room individually. An inspiration image can establish direction, but it cannot show how your own materials and lighting will affect the finished combination.

Keep the work boundaries visible
A hallway refresh can meet several rooms and door faces. Decide where painting stops rather than assuming every adjoining surface follows. With cabinets, specify fronts, frames and exposed sides separately from interiors. These details make the request concrete and help distinguish a focused update from a larger repaint.

Treat finish quality as a scope discussion
Explain the existing surface and any patching, texture or wear that concerns you. Ask which preparation is included and what appearance is realistic for that scope. More sheen is not a substitute for surface correction. Unknown coatings or recurring damage may need assessment before the painting approach is settled.

Coordinate the work with the household
Mention rooms that must stay usable, furniture requiring a plan and other trades affecting the schedule. For exterior work, identify retained materials, access and condition concerns separately. Timing depends on the accepted work and appropriate conditions. Ask about coating-specific return to use rather than assuming every finish is ready together.

  • Can adjoining rooms use different colors?
Yes. Define the transition and review the combination from connecting spaces.
  • Should cabinets match the trim exactly?
That is a design choice; each surface still needs a suitable finish.
  • Does a small sample settle every decision?
No. Review it in place with retained materials and normal lighting.
  • Can I ask about exterior accents only?
Yes. Identify the elements so condition, suitability and boundaries can be assessed.
