Identify the material and existing finish
Wood, composite, capped composite and PVC are not interchangeable. If the material or coating is unknown, say so; appearance alone may not identify it. Share any reliable product information or finish history. Manufacturer restrictions matter, and this wood-deck inquiry does not offer composite or PVC refinishing. Permission to coat a railing does not establish suitability for walking boards.

Separate the appearance goal from suitability
Describe the desired color and how much wood character you hope to retain. Worn-looking boards may still carry earlier coating, and an opaque finish can limit a grain-visible change. Do not assume stripping or conversion to transparent stain is included. Use our deck stain versus paint guide for comparisons; the estimate should address your actual surfaces.

Define components and readiness concerns
Request floors, stair faces, rails and edges individually. Undersides, hidden faces and dismantling are not automatic inclusions. Mention peeling, loose parts, soft-looking wood or recurring dampness without probing, scraping or sanding for the inquiry. Finishing is not a structural inspection, repair or moisture remedy. Unresolved problems may exclude or postpone coating rather than become part of an assumed painting scope.

Agree protection, access and return to use
Discuss appropriate preparation, nearby-surface protection and responsibility for moving furniture and planters. Explain whether the deck serves an essential entrance. Application depends on suitable surfaces and actual conditions, not a fixed weather promise. Ask separately about walking, furniture return and cleaning under the selected product instructions. A dry-looking surface does not answer every readiness question.

  • Can the rails and floor be separate options?
Yes. Identify each component, material and requested face.
  • What if I do not know the old coating?
Keep it marked unknown and discuss assessment before preparation.
  • Does a new finish repair damaged boards?
No. Material failure requires separate attention.
  • Should I prepare photos?
If available, keep safe overview photos ready and ask how to share them.
