Screen the identified component

Use these named-product examples to mark candidate, manufacturer restriction or hold. “Candidate” means further assessment is needed, not permission to start. This matrix does not certify paintability or determine warranty coverage.

Manufacturer and EPA sources checked October 21, 2026. Confirm the current instructions for your exact product before work is specified.
  • Exposed wood window parts or separate wood trim
Initial scope status: Candidate for assessment, not automatically included

Source-supported reason: Andersen and Marvin give finishing guidance for specified wood window surfaces. Separate surrounding trim must be identified independently.

What to verify next: Identify the component, current finish and applicable instructions. Keep operational/contact boundaries separate.

    Andersen wood and non-wood guidance
    Marvin general instructions, p. 1
  • Andersen fiberglass, Flexacron, Fibrex, vinyl cladding or aluminum cladding
Initial scope status: Manufacturer exclusion from assumed repainting scope

Source-supported reason: Andersen says not to apply finishes to these listed surfaces.

What to verify next: Confirm the actual Andersen component. Do not transfer this list to other manufacturers.

    Andersen listed surface restrictions
  • Identified Marvin Elevate / Essential Ultrex component
Initial scope status: Candidate for assessment under the applicable manual

Source-supported reason: The owner’s manual provides a painting procedure with coating and adhesion-check conditions for Ultrex.

What to verify next: Confirm line, component, factory finish and current instructions. This does not approve every fiberglass or Marvin surface.

Marvin Elevate + Essential manual, printed p. 10
  • Marvin aluminum cladding covered by the cited instructions
    Initial scope status: Manufacturer exclusion

Source-supported reason: Marvin’s general instructions say not to paint its aluminum cladding.

What to verify next: Distinguish factory cladding from unrelated bare-metal trim or surrounding materials.

    Marvin general instructions, p. 1
  • Pella vinyl or exterior cladding
Initial scope status: Manufacturer does not recommend repainting; do not assume inclusion

Source-supported reason: Pella’s FAQ discourages repainting these surfaces and links loss of coverage for a defect to paint contributing to that defect.

What to verify next: Check your product’s guidance and warranty directly. This is not a statement that all coverage automatically disappears.

  • Separate AZEK cellular-PVC trim: Premium or PaintPro
Initial scope status: Assess the identified trim product independently

Source-supported reason: The cited guide says Premium need not be painted for protection; PaintPro must be painted. Each section has coating and color conditions.

What to verify next: Identify the trim line and proposed color/coating. Do not transfer trim guidance to the adjacent vinyl window.

AZEK trim guide, printed pp. 4–5
  • Glass, seals, hardware, weatherstripping and specified sliding/contact interfaces
Initial scope status: Outside the assumed decorative coating scope

Source-supported reason: The cited instructions distinguish finishable parts from non-wood or operational components.

What to verify next: Mark boundaries using the exact assembly instructions, including any specified wood-to-glass edge detail. This row is not a universal masking rule.

    Andersen component boundaries
    Marvin contact-surface exclusions, p. 1
  • Unknown vinyl, composite, fiberglass, aluminum or clad product
Initial scope status: Hold for identification

Source-supported reason: Conflicting product-specific guidance makes a material-only answer unreliable. Holding unknown products is an editorial planning rule.

What to verify next: Identify the product or obtain manufacturer guidance; a paint’s substrate claim cannot approve the window assembly.

Make one record per component, not one blanket permission

Give each opening a simple ID and separate rows for the requested parts. If the trim and window unit have different manufacturers, keep their instruction links and decisions separate. Record uncertainty rather than assigning a material from appearance alone.

Pause before disturbing older paint

For paint-disturbing work in a pre-1978 home, resolve applicable lead-safe/RRP requirements before preparation. A newer window does not establish that adjacent older trim is lead-free. This guide provides no lead-removal instructions or claim of company certification.

Keep condition and warranty questions separate

Sticking, leaks or damaged parts need separate assessment. A manufacturer painting route is not a promise that any particular job is suitable or warranty-protected. Refer product-specific warranty questions to the manufacturer.

Copy an opening-by-opening scope record

Copy or print these labeled lines. Repeat the record for each component whose material, product instruction or status differs. You do not need to dismantle or disturb a window to complete it; leave inaccessible details unresolved.

Opening ID and location: ________
Side: [interior / exterior]
Component: [casing / sill / sash or frame / cladding / separate surrounding trim]
Manufacturer and exact product line: [known details or unknown]
Label photo or identification status: ________
Current finish and desired change: ________
Instruction URL, date checked and component restriction: ________
Status: [candidate for assessment / manufacturer restriction or exclusion / hold]
Excluded seals, hardware and moving-contact surfaces: ________
Condition or operation issue requiring separate assessment: ________
Home age and paint-disturbance planning question: ________
Requested coating work versus unresolved questions: ________

Worked hypothetical example: one opening, two products

Illustration only. This is not a Brush & Bright job, offer or warranty determination.

Opening A, exterior. Desired change: darker color. House age unknown; paint-disturbance planning remains unresolved. No diagnosis of condition or operation has been made.

A1: vinyl window unit

Manufacturer / model: Unknown; label photo not yet available.

Current finish: Existing white surface; coating history unknown.

Applicable instruction: Not identified.

Status: Hold for identification.

Requested work / exclusions: No unit repainting included while identification is unresolved. Glass, seals, hardware and contact surfaces are not assumed to be decorative coating surfaces.

A2: separate AZEK Premium trim surround

Identification: Hypothetically confirmed by the owner’s trim product record; not inferred from the window.

Instruction: AZEK trim guide, Premium section, printed page 4; checked October 21, 2026.

Status: Candidate for assessment only.

Open question: Check the exact darker color/coating against current Premium instructions; existing finish and condition still need review.

Requested work / boundary: Assess the separate surround only. Do not extend its result to A1.

AZEK Premium trim instructions

Keep A1 on hold while A2 is assessed independently. Trim instructions cannot supply the missing permission for a different window product.

Limits of this planning tool

No blanket approval for all wood, vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum or PVC products.

No window repair, replacement, glazing, water-entry diagnosis, operational adjustment or lead-abatement service is offered here.

Brand examples do not establish a partnership, product-use practice or ability to perform every manufacturer procedure.

Ask about a clearly bounded painting scope

Bring the component record and unresolved questions to Brush & Bright. Confirm which requested work can be assessed before treating an entire opening as included.
