Window details need a surface-by-surface plan

A window painting request should distinguish interior trim from outside surfaces and identify the material of each component. We review those details before scoping the finish.
  • Interior casings and trim
List the surrounding painted trim you want refreshed, including the transition to the room wall.
  • Paintable frames
Assess frame material and existing finish instead of assuming every factory-finished component can be coated.
  • Sills and detailed edges
Show worn edges and horizontal areas so preparation can be considered separately from the surrounding trim.
  • Exterior window trim
Identify outside surfaces and their access requirements as a separate part of the estimate.
  • Protection and boundaries
Plan protection for glazing and adjacent finishes while identifying seals, hardware and other areas to leave unpainted.
  • Color coordination
Review the proposed trim shade beside walls indoors or siding outside so the details fit the broader finish scheme.

Our process

  • Identify surfaces
Confirm frame and trim components and their materials.
  • Set boundaries
Agree on painted areas and components left untouched.
  • Protect and prepare
Protect glazing and surroundings and prepare suitable surfaces.
  • Apply the finish
Paint the agreed details with attention to edges and coverage.

Be specific about what “painting the windows” includes
Distinguish the window from its surrounding trim
For a Des Plaines window painting estimate, begin by identifying the exact surfaces. “Windows” may mean interior casings, sills, the frame itself or trim outside the house. Those are not interchangeable scopes. Photograph one complete opening and then the surfaces you want painted. Mark whether the request is inside, outside or both, and count openings of different sizes separately. A room with several detailed openings can involve more edge work than a simple window count suggests.

Confirm that the material is suitable
Wood, previously painted trim and factory-finished components may require different approaches, and some materials or finishes may not be appropriate for repainting. Provide any known manufacturer or material information and photographs of labels if available. Do not assume that a new color is suitable for every frame. Existing coating condition, surface compatibility and any relevant manufacturer guidance need to be considered before a finish is selected.

Keep moving and sealing areas out of the coating scope
Painting should have clear boundaries around glazing, hardware, seals and moving components. Tell us about windows that already stick, fail to close or show damaged material; a decorative finish is not a remedy for those problems. Glass repair, window replacement and correcting mechanical faults are outside the assumed painting scope. Agreed protection and careful edge work help keep the requested cosmetic update distinct from window repair.

Review wear and adjacent surfaces
Sills and exposed edges may show different wear from vertical trim. Peeling or staining should be examined rather than covered without understanding the condition beneath it. Active water entry or deterioration requires attention before coating. Also decide whether the adjoining wall or exterior siding will be repainted. Keeping an existing wall finish means the trim-to-wall boundary needs to be explicit; repainting the room creates a different sequence and scope.

Prepare a useful estimate request
Send the number of openings, interior or exterior locations, approximate height, material information and photographs showing surrounding access. Mention curtains, blinds, furniture or outside obstacles that may affect preparation. Include the existing and desired colors and any known condition issues. We can then discuss an appropriate window-frame and trim painting plan, rather than assume the work includes every component of every window or promise a universal coating result.

  • Do you paint glass or window seals?
No. The scope concerns suitable frames and trim, with boundaries around glass, seals, hardware and other components that should remain unpainted.
  • Can every window frame material be painted?
No universal recommendation applies. Material, current finish, condition and relevant manufacturer guidance must be considered.
  • Does window painting fix a window that sticks or leaks?
No. Operational faults and water-entry problems need separate assessment and should not be disguised with paint.
  • Can I have only interior window trim painted?
Yes. Specify interior casings, sills or other details and whether adjoining walls remain unchanged so we can define the scope.
