Decide what a room repaint includes
List walls, ceilings, baseboards, window trim, doors and closets separately. Mark stained wood or built-ins that stay untouched. A room count misses several doorways, tall walls or a ceiling continuing into another space. For walls-only work, make that boundary explicit before comparing estimates.

Look at repairs in the room’s normal light
Note holes, patch edges, cracks and stains in the room’s normal light. Ask what preparation is included and whether broader correction is separate. Recurring cracks or moisture marks need their cause considered. Changing the finish does not automatically resolve every irregularity already in the surface.

Plan the transitions before choosing sheen
View samples beside retained flooring and woodwork in daylight and evening lighting. For rooms open to a hallway or stair, decide where colors change. Discuss wall sheen separately from doors and trim, based on appearance, cleaning needs and surface suitability rather than making everything match.

Keep everyday routes usable
Identify furniture to move, fragile items to remove and heavy pieces needing a separate plan. Explain which rooms and routes must remain usable. Confirm protection, preparation and cleanup expectations. Ask when the selected coating allows normal use and cleaning rather than assuming touch-dry means fully ready.

  • Will a small touch-up blend with the wall?
It may not blend invisibly with an older finish. Color, sheen, existing wear and lighting all affect the result. If matching matters, discuss the smallest sensible repaint boundary rather than assuming a patch can always be hidden.
  • Are ceilings automatically included?
No. List them separately, including any continuous adjoining ceiling.
  • Should every surface share one sheen?
No. Walls and woodwork need their own finish discussion.
  • What if a stain keeps returning?
Discuss its cause before treating painting as the solution.
