Questions to settle before work

  • Priorities
    What changes, and what stays?
  • Condition
    What needs assessment first?
  • Scope
Which surfaces and preparation are included?
  • Sequence
How will access and timing work?
  • Aftercare
When can surfaces return to use?

Separate siding, trim and accents
Name the elevations and suitable siding, fascia, trim, shutters or doors you want included. Identify unpainted materials that stay unchanged. An exterior quote does not automatically include every opening, garage door or detached structure. Distinguish trim-only work from a full repaint at the outset.

Describe the condition, not just the color
Describe loose coatings, residue, open joints or recurring damp areas by location. Ask how cleaning, preparation and primer relate to each accepted material. Deteriorated components and moisture concerns need assessment; a new coating cannot replace sound material or correct an unresolved source of water.

Check access at each side of the house
Mention changes in ground level, planting beds, fences and surfaces above lower roofs. Discuss what needs moving and who handles it. Include doors and walkways that must remain usable, along with adjacent finishes requiring protection from preparation debris and paint. Access matters even for modest areas.

Make color and timing decisions together
Compare colors with the roof, masonry and other retained finishes. Clarify any applicable association approval. Preparation and application depend on surface moisture, coating requirements and suitable weather. Ask how the sequence changes with conditions rather than relying on a fixed duration or guaranteed seasonal window.

  • Can one side be painted instead of the whole house?
Ask for that option, with the specific elevation identified. Uneven fading and the condition of adjoining surfaces can affect how a partial repaint looks. Compare the boundaries, preparation and expected visual result before choosing a limited scope.
  • Does trim need the same preparation as siding?
Not necessarily; assess each material and its existing finish.
  • Are garage doors included?
Only when expressly part of the agreed surface list.
  • Can weather change the plan?
Yes. Application must suit actual conditions and the selected coating.
