Use the Village checklist without relying on a label
Port Barrington’s Building Department page distinguishes ordinary maintenance from other work and advises residents to check specific projects with Building and Zoning. It also notes that association requirements may apply. Use those resources with a description of what will actually change, not just the word repair. Record the affected component, extent of work and whether its surroundings stay intact. Keep any applicable association and municipal requirements with the task list; the general examples are not approval for an unseen project.
Port Barrington building guidance and construction hours
Describe the history of recurring problems
For a sticking interior door, shifting cabinet-door alignment or a drywall crack that returns, note when it began and whether conditions have changed. Share existing safe photos and approximate dimensions. Do not force a door, open a wall or remove old flooring to investigate. Cosmetic work should not conceal an unresolved source of damage. The offered scope includes localized drywall, interior-door, trim and cabinet-door tasks, not structural repairs, electrical work, plumbing or moisture remediation.
Paint-disturbing work is limited to homes verified as built in 1979 or later. Include the construction year and its source; renovation dates do not replace verification of the home’s construction year. We do not accept paint-disturbing work in pre-1979 or unverified homes.
Windows and doors are limited to suitable existing openings, with no structural enlargement or fire-rated door installation. Lock hardware is incidental to an agreed repair only; no standalone locksmith service. Applicable permit and licensing requirements must be checked before scope and scheduling are agreed.
Keep replacement products and existing fittings distinct
For rods, pictures and mirrors, say whether a new item is being installed or an existing item moved. Give dimensions, weights, hanging points, hardware and proposed locations. Old anchors do not establish support for a different load. For furniture assembly, identify the model, instructions, parts status and final position. Manufacturer-required anti-tip attachment must be suitable. Include any holes you want considered for separate repair and clarify the agreed finish; removal or an invisible paint match is not assumed.
Plan laminate preparation and household access
Send the exact laminate product, manufacturer instructions, room sizes and existing-floor information. Note observed dampness, movement, unevenness and thresholds. Product-specific substrate, moisture, underlayment and movement requirements govern suitability; structural subfloor work is excluded. Identify where materials can be kept and which rooms must remain usable, then agree clearance, supply and any removal or disposal. Check the Village’s current construction-hour guidance when discussing timing, without treating permitted hours as a confirmed appointment.

For any work that may disturb paint, provide the home’s construction year and the source used to verify it. Only verified 1979-or-newer homes are eligible for paint-disturbing work. Photos and task details help define materials, preparation and finish boundaries before scope and scheduling are agreed; concealed conditions may need an on-site assessment.
