Check an overlay only where it applies
Barrington publishes a Historic Overlay District map, property survey and guidance about exterior changes. If a wider project affects the outside of your home, use those resources to check the specific address early. Do not assume every Barrington property is in the district or apply exterior-review guidance to every interior task. Keep the bounded interior work requested here separate from exterior or structural plans, and ask Village staff about requirements for the actual project.

Identify retained materials before choosing replacements
For interior doors, trim and cabinet doors, record the affected piece, approximate dimensions, profile or hardware details and the functional problem. Explain which original or matching components you want to keep. A loose hinge and a damaged trim section need different scopes. Existing photos can help identify what needs review; do not remove pieces just to obtain a sample. Exact reproduction, specialist restoration and an invisible finish match are not promised. Agree any replacement or paint touch-up separately.
Paint-disturbing work is limited to homes verified as built in 1979 or later. Include the construction year and its source; renovation dates do not replace verification of the home’s construction year. We do not accept paint-disturbing work in pre-1979 or unverified homes.
Windows and doors are limited to suitable existing openings, with no structural enlargement or fire-rated door installation. Lock hardware is incidental to an agreed repair only; no standalone locksmith service. Applicable permit and licensing requirements must be checked before scope and scheduling are agreed.
Place new items around existing features
For curtain rods, show the proposed position and nearby casing, with rod specifications and panel length. For pictures and mirrors, include size, weight, hanging points and layout preferences. Existing holes or supplied anchors do not establish suitable support. Furniture assembly requests should identify the model, instructions, parts status and final location; manufacturer-required anti-tip attachment needs suitable support. Note any finishes or belongings that need protection and keep the route to the working area clear by agreement.
Define flooring edges and wall repairs
For laminate, share the exact product instructions, rooms, existing floor and transitions. Identify trim to retain and any door-clearance questions. The substrate, moisture, underlayment and movement requirements must suit the selected product. Do not disturb old layers to identify them. For localized drywall, describe the affected area and any unresolved dampness or recurring crack before cosmetic work. Structural subfloor repair, moisture remediation, plumbing and electrical work are excluded; removal, disposal and finishing are expressly scoped.

For any work that may disturb paint, provide the home’s construction year and the source used to verify it. Only verified 1979-or-newer homes are eligible for paint-disturbing work. Photos and task details help define materials, preparation and finish boundaries before scope and scheduling are agreed; concealed conditions may need an on-site assessment.
