Organize what you know about the cabinets

Known details and honest unknowns both help.
  • Known finish information
Share labels or reliable previous-work details.
  • Door and drawer fronts
Identify the faces you want refreshed.
  • Backs and frames
State which additional surfaces are included.
  • Exposed panels
List visible ends and island sides.
  • Interiors and toe kicks
Mark what changes and what stays.
  • Condition concerns
Describe damage without disturbing the finish.

Compare refinishing options with the cabinets you have
Start with observations, not a guessed material
Describe what you see: lifting layers, worn edges, swelling, rough patches or components that do not work properly. Share reliable material or paint information if available, but say when it is unknown. Do not sand or strip an uncertain coating for photos. Any assessment needed before disturbance should be resolved before preparation begins.

Separate a finish candidate from a failing component
Painting suitable retained cabinets can change their appearance; it cannot make damaged material sound or fix a mechanical fault. Ask which parts can be accepted for the proposed finish and which need separate attention. Do not infer suitability from the home’s age or assume every manufactured surface can receive the same coating.

Define both the coating questions and the surfaces
Discuss cleaning, retained-coating compatibility and any adhesion evaluation needed. Ask how grain, texture or previous repairs may remain visible. Then identify fronts, backs, edges, fixed frames and exposed panels in the estimate, keeping interiors or hardware changes explicit. An agreed color alone does not define the preparation or the full cabinet scope.

Agree household arrangements and finish care
Explain the storage and kitchen access you need. Ask what must be cleared, how removable parts will be handled, where work occurs and how retained surfaces will be protected. Obtain selected-coating instructions for reassembly, handling and cleaning. No universal cure timetable establishes when every part of the kitchen can return to normal use.

  • What if I do not know the old coating?
Say so and share reliable information you have. Appropriate assessment should guide preparation rather than guesswork.
  • Does cabinet age determine whether it can be painted?
No. Actual materials, condition and coating compatibility need consideration.
  • Will paint hide every old patch or texture?
Not necessarily. Discuss achievable appearance and the preparation included.
  • Are interior shelves and new hinges included?
Only when expressly agreed. Keep these decisions separate from front-face painting.
